Bird eating watermelon in Costa RicaFeeding your pet birds too many bird seeds every day is not always necessarily a good habit and might harm their health in the long run.
Watermelon, on the other side, is one of the acceptable foods that you can consider offering to them. It provides a significant amount of water to the birds and helps them stay hydrated for survival.

Can Birds Eat Watermelon?

Yes, no problem at all.
Watermelon is known as a refreshing and water-rich fruit which contains 92% water. It’s good for bird's heart health because of its powerful antioxidants, including lycopene.
It’s also high in vitamins, nutrients, and beneficial plant compounds as well. By eating fruit with a high content of water, it will last long in their stomach, making them feel full and prevent dehydration.
The watermelon seeds are also edible, so don’t throw them away. Birds usually pick out the seeds first then go for the rest of the melon itself.
However, you can remove the seeds to help them prevent the risk of choking, it is entirely optional.

How to feed watermelon to birds safely

For the best quality, some feeders decide to remove the seeds first then soak the melon overnight. In that way, the watermelon will be softened but still be able to remain its juiciness as its best. It would also help if you also broke it into small portions and hand it over to the birds with limited quantities at a time.
If you can, put it into a suet cake or hanging cage feeders or poles to avoid pests from stealing their food. Accordingly, more species of birds are welcome to have a safe and healthy buffet at your backyard.
Note that the rind of watermelon is not a very good and healthy part that could be enjoyed by the birds. During the transport process, the outer skin is contaminated by pesticides, fungicides, waxes as well as processing plant chemical washes. So it is not a preferable option to feed the rinds to your pet birds.
The melon is already tasty itself, so there is plenty for them to enjoy without the outer skin of the watermelon.

Conclusion

After all, it is clear to say that birds can eat watermelon with no fear at all. Although it is not as appealing as other types of bird foods, watermelon is still known as a very healthy and tasty treat that we can offer to them occasionally.
However, be mindful of the amount of melon that you give to them. Remember to calculate your treats thoughtfully and don't just feed them melon every day. In that way, they will be able to maintain their nutritional values and live a healthier life.
